How Long Are HPA Tanks Valid For?

HPA Tank Safety: Hydrotesting, UK Regulations, and Staying Field-Legal

If you’ve made the jump to HPA (High Pressure Air), you already know the benefits: incredible consistency, adjustable FPS, and silent performance. But owning an HPA tank comes with a serious responsibility—safety. These bottles are pressurized up to 3,000 or 4,500psi, making them powerful tools that require regular "health checks" known as Hydrostatic Testing.

At BZ Tactical, we pride ourselves on supplying the largest range of HPA tanks in the UK from HK ArmyRebel Precision & Powair but even the best tanks have an expiration date. Here is everything you need to know to stay safe and legal on the field.

When Does My Tank Need Testing?

Hydrostatic testing (or "hydroing") involves a specialist inspecting the tank for structural integrity and pressure-testing it to ensure it won't fail under load. The frequency of this test depends entirely on what your tank is made of.

Carbon Fibre Tanks: Every 5 Years

Carbon fibre tanks are lightweight and high-capacity, but the composite wrap is more susceptible to fatigue than metal. You must have your carbon fibre tank tested every 5 years from the date of manufacture.

Aluminium Tanks: Every 10 Years (UK Standard)

Aluminium tanks are the workhorses of the airsoft world. As outlined by the UK Government, unless the manufacturer specifically states a shorter interval on the bottle itself (very important you check this), aluminium tanks must be tested every 10 years from the date of manufacture.

So as Rebel Precision 13ci tanks do not specify a test date on the bottle, they are valid for 10 years.

Reference: This standard is aligned with the GOV.UK website MGN 374 (M+F) Amendment 1 regarding the carriage and use of pressure receptacles. Under Table 1, it states that Compressed Air Tanks not used for underwater breathing apparatus are to be tested every 10 years.

Pro-Tip: The "Birth Date" (date of manufacture) is always printed or stamped on the bottle. If you are ever in doubt, check the label or the crown of the tank!

Safety-Tip: If there is any noticeable damage to your HPA tank, please replace it regardless of when the hydro test is due. It is not worth the risk.

Should I Test or Buy New?

If your HPA tank has expired, you have two options: send it off for Hydrostatic Testing or buy a new one.

If you're using an Aluminium Tank, it is highly recommended you just purchase a new tank. This is often cheaper and quicker than testing your old tank.

Hydrostatic Testing is only cost effective for those that are using Carbon Fiber HPA tanks. Testing must be carried out by a qualified air cylinder tester.

The New UK Regulations: What is the "Rho" Mark?

As of September 2024, the landscape for HPA tanks in the UK changed significantly. To be sold legally within the UK, all new tanks must now meet specific regulatory markings.

  • The Rho Mark: This is the new UK-specific regulation. It is visually stamped on the tank as the Greek letter Rho (ρ). This legislation was established in January 2023, however Rho Stamped HPA Tanks were not available to purchase anywhere until September 2024 when BZ Tactical introduced new updated HK Army HPA Tanks.

  • UN-Certified Tanks: Some premium tanks are UN-Certified. This is a "global gold standard" approved for use in over 50 countries. UN-Certification actually supersedes the Rho specificathion, meaning if your tank is UN-Certified, it is fully legal for UK use.

What if I bought my tank before September 2024?

Don't panic! If you own a tank purchased before the new regulations came in, it is still legal for use in the UK provided it has a valid hydrostatic test and carries the Pi (π) mark (the previous European standard). But please check with your local site regarding their own regulations first before purchasing! (Read more below)

If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, please ensure the new HPA tank you are buying is Rho or UN-Certified. No store located in Great Britain should legally be selling you a tank produced from September 2024 that is not Rho or UN-Certified.

Site Discretion: Check Before You Play

While the law allows for the continued use of Pi-marked tanks (provided they are in test), it is important to remember that Airsoft sites are private property. Some sites, for insurance or safety-policy reasons, may choose to enforce a rule that all HPA tanks must be Rho/UN stamped. This is entirely down to the site's discretion. If you are heading to a new site or you are switching over to HPA, it is always worth checking their specific HPA safety rules in advance to avoid disappointment at the chrono station.

Staying Safe

A damaged or out-of-date tank isn't just a risk to you—it’s a risk to everyone on the field. If your tank has deep gouges, cracks in the gel coat (for carbon tanks), or is past its testing date, do not fill it.
